Another Winter Away

Spending Winter in Chiang Mai: A Digital Nomad’s Perspective

This winter, my family and I traded snow and ice for the warm, welcoming charm of Chiang Mai, Thailand. As a digital nomad, I’ve had the privilege of working from some incredible places, but this season in Chiang Mai has been particularly special. Here’s a glimpse into our life in this vibrant city, balancing work, family time, and cultural exploration.

A Family-Friendly Digital Nomad Destination

Chiang Mai is a haven for digital nomads, but what makes it stand out is how accommodating it is for families. From affordable housing to a plethora of activities for kids, this city makes settling in effortless. We found a cozy, fully furnished apartment in the Old Town, close to cafes, coworking spaces, and parks.

Daily Rhythm: Work, Play, Repeat

My mornings usually start early. While my son and wife enjoy breakfast together, I carve out a couple of hours for focused work at a nearby coworking space. Chiang Mai is known for its thriving coworking scene, and I found a great spot with strong Wi-Fi, quiet workstations, and plenty of coffee.

By late morning, I’m back with my family, and we’re off exploring. Whether it’s a visit to the Chiang Mai Zoo, feeding elephants at a sanctuary, or wandering the Old City’s temples, there’s always something new to discover. Afternoons often involve playtime at a local park or a fun family cooking class where we’ve learned to make authentic Thai dishes.

Building Connections Over the Years

We’ve been coming to Chiang Mai since 2017, and over the years, it’s become like a second home. We’ve made lasting friendships with locals and fellow expats, creating a wonderful sense of community. Our family has also enjoyed participating in local sports activities, from casual soccer games to weekend badminton matches. These connections and activities have enriched our experience and made each visit more meaningful.

Embracing Local Culture

Chiang Mai’s rich culture is one of the biggest reasons we chose to spend our winter here. We’ve participated in traditional lantern festivals, explored bustling night markets, and savored the local cuisine. My son’s favorite? Mango sticky rice! These experiences have not only been enjoyable but have also given us a deeper appreciation for Thai traditions and hospitality.

Balancing Work and Family

Being a digital nomad with a family means finding a delicate balance between work and personal time. While I manage my projects and podcast interviews, I’m also mindful of carving out meaningful moments with my family. Evening walks by the Ping River or a game night at home after a day of adventure keep us connected and grounded.

Reflections on Chiang Mai

Spending winter in Chiang Mai has been transformative. The city’s blend of modern amenities and traditional charm makes it an ideal spot for a digital nomad lifestyle. For our family, it’s been a season of growth, exploration, and connection. Chiang Mai has shown us that you don’t have to sacrifice work for adventure or family time for personal pursuits; you can have it all with a bit of planning and an open heart.

As our time here comes to an end, we’re already planning our next adventure. But Chiang Mai will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we know we’ll be back someday. Until then, it’s time to pack up the memories and move on to the next chapter of our digital nomad journey.
